For a little guy who has sensory issues having jets screaming over your head in rapid succession at random intervals just does not work. We did not realize we had an issue until 3 days into the vacation which was good. Our first full day down there was Sunday and it was raining so any jets that took off had their sound muffled by the storms. Then Monday we headed inland so we had no idea the jets were flying. On Tuesday we finally hit the beach....for a few minutes...
This would be the last time his little feet touched the sand. It didn't take long to realize that he was not going to survive outside so we headed indoors to the pool where the sounds was "somewhat" muffled. He would still whimper every time they flew over, but the terrified screams weren't so bad. That was until he got into bed for his nap. By Tuesday night he was refusing to sleep much at all.
You can tell from the picture we were breaking all kinds of "our" rules. His pacifier made it's way out of his bed and into the outside world as we tried to get him to sleep in any way possible. For the first time in 8 1/2 years of parenting we broke my cardinal rule of no kids sleeping in our bed. Not that it worked!
So in the wee hours of Wednesday morning we decided that we were going to head home a little early. So, we packed in as much swimming, playing, and DQ as we could on Wednesday and headed home by way of a friend's house on Thursday.
I ended up taking him to the doctor on Friday to make sure we hadn't ruined his ears because even at home he was still refusing to sleep. The doctor said his ears were great and told us to give him three days to get back into his safe place. And I'm happy to say that this is our third night home and he's starting to figure it out again.
And just in case your worried, he did smile a lot too!
Really! That's a smile..he squints his eyes and shows you his teeth!
