Often the most frustrating aspect of having a sensory kid is that you know they are struggling, but you have no idea why and no idea how to fix it.
One of our weekly struggles is Sunday morning. Little Man can rise with the happiest of smiles and the bounciest of legs, but as soon as I bring out the church clothes he visibly sags and he begins the doggy whine that can drive a person crazy. I'm fully aware he does not like Sundays. He is very verbal about that. But, he can never tell me why. To make the puzzle even harder he loves other events much like Sunday School. He loves Awana and VBS. In fact he asks to go to these events.
Today as we went through our morning battle he finally found a word to help me understand. Changes. There are too many changes on Sundays. My immediate reaction was to point out that those events he loves have the same changes, but then it slowly began to sink into my slow brain what he might be experiencing. I did an educated guess on how many transitions he would have to go through during a typical Awana night or a VBS day and figured it was 5 or 6. On a Sunday morning he goes through double that. Not only do the number of transitions double, but they happen in a short period of time. In the 2 1/2 hours he is at church he crams all those transitions in.
Needless to say we are going to make changes. It is so encouraging that he finally found some words to help us understand those inner struggles that we can't always figure out.
